Southeast Florida Regional Equitable Connection

Transportation is one of the biggest regional issues and challenges that we all face. Our focus in this month’s web page is on Transit oriented Development or TOD. We have a number of resources provided by our Partner at the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (TCRPC). Please take a look at the information and list of resources provided starting with some basic definitions of TOD’s. This information should be important to you because of the potential impact on affordable and workforce housing. TOD’s can offer a mix of residential development around major transit hubs. This should lower the cost of living and increase livability because of savings related to one’s ability to utilize public transit and because of the convenience of services incorporated into the development along with the incorporation of smart growth principles that yield greater walkability, increased safety through design and 24 hour usability, more open and public spaces and lower overall transportation and environmental impacts. The Treasure Coast Regional Planning council is building a map of the entire region showing the main transportation facilities like I-95 and the regional rail system. When completed there will be various layers of information that you can navigate through to see how you will be connected (or not) to the overall regional grid. Good Luck in your navigation. This study examines neighborhood housing and transportation choices available to working households in 28 U.S. metropolitan areas. The purpose is to determine how constraints within the neighborhood and the region—e.g., lack of access to transportation choices, distance from job centers, shortages of affordable housing—affect household costs and how high-cost burdens impact the household, their neighborhoods and the region.
